Use this, that and these, those


Singular and Plural numbers



  • This words this, that, these, those are pronouns as well as adjectives.
  • When they have a noun just after them and qualify them they are demonstrative Adjectives. When they have a verb after them, they work as pronouns. 
  • This and that are singular in number, while 'these' and 'those' are plural.
  • This and these show nearness, while 'that' and 'those' show distance.



  1. This is a book.
  2. These are books.
  3. This is an exercise-book.
  4. These are exercise books.
  5. That is a pen.
  6. Those are pens.
  7. That is an inkpot.
  8. This is not a map.
  9. These are not a map.
  10. That is not a knife.
